He not only sings some of his favourite arias but also conducts the orchestra for Mstislav Rostropovich’s performance of a Haydn Cello concerto, plays piano and joins soprano Olga Borodina in an excellent performance of a duet from Bizet’s “Carmen”. Mstislav Rostropovich is internationally acclaimed and acknowledged as the world's greatest living cellist. He is noted for his commanding technique and intense, visionary playing. Rostropovich has also won outstanding acclaim as a conductor, appearing with most of the world's leading orchestras. He holds over 40 honorary degrees and over 30 different nations have bestowed more than 130 major awards and decorations upon him. Olga Borodina has been a prominent member of the Kirov Opera since 1987. She  is hugely admired for the strength and dramatic expression that she brings to her characters. The Kirov Orchestra enjoys a long and distinguished history as one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia, founded in the 18th century during the reign of Peter the Great. Numerous internationally famous musicians conducted the Orchestra.
