Order No: 60044Giuseppe Verdi Nabucco Orchestra: Junge Philharmonie WienConductor: Michael Lessky On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s death and the commemoration year that is linked with it, the DVD in hand presents “Nabucco”, his first great freedom opera. Already its première in 1842 was a triumphant success for the composer due to the fact that the opera was exactly the Italians’ kind of thing: they recognized themselves in the enslaved Hebrews who were oppressed by the Babylonians and celebrated Verdi as symbol of national liberation. Especially the famous choir of aspiration “Va pensiero” (that was even sung by the mourning people of Milan on Verdi’s funeral) has lost nothing of its popularity until today. The open-air staging of “Nabucco” that is documented here, is the most expensive and lavish production of the third-largest European Open-Air Festival to date. It was a great popular success and got excellent reviews:“The miracle of St. Margarethen” (Täglich Alles, Wien), “Nabucco goes beyond all previous standards. Unique.” (Münchner Abendzeitung).Besides the complete recording of this tremendous production, the DVD in hand offers additional interviews with persons involved and with the audience. |
