Order No: 51002Johann StraußViennese BloodOrchestra: Philharmonic Orchestra BratislavaConductor: Johannes Wildner„Viennese Blood“, Johann Strauß’ last operetta, held its première shortly after the composer’s death on October 25th 1899 at the Carl Theatre in Vienna and, first of all, was a complete failure. It was only six years later that the operetta started its triumphal march through the opera houses and until today it is regarded as one of Strauß’ most popular works. The special thing about this work is its curious genesis: the operetta is a compilation of older Strauß’ melodies completed by a new libretto. Johann Strauß himself gave his consent and started compiling the material but unfortunately could not complete his work. Therefore, “Viennese Blood” was musically completed by the musical director of the “Theater an der Wien”, Adolf Müller, in accordance with Strauß’ wishes. The libretto, based on well-tried patterns of amorous entanglement and, of course, provided with a Happy End, was contributed by Viktor Leon and Leo Stein. The DVD on hand documents an open air staging from 1994, recorded on one of the most beautiful open air stages in Europe in the “Mecca of Operetta”, the picturesque Austrian village Mörbisch by the Neusiedler Sea where the biggest Operetta Festival in the world is held every year. Today, due to its high artistic level, the festival attracts more than 200.000 spectators per annum. As a special feature the DVD offers, besides the complete recording of the operetta, a documentation (ca. 50 min.) about Johann Strauß’ life and work. |
