This recording presents an outstanding interpretation of one of Mozart’s most aristocratic compositions. An opera seria, loosely based on a play by Racine, Mitridate was composed in 1770 when Mozart was just fourteen-years-old. An infrequently performed work, it reveals a stunning mastery of opera seria and was a great success at its première in Milan.

This production from the Lyon National Opera, directed by Jean-Claude Fall, was first seen at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 1983 and was conducted, as it is in this recording, by Theodor Guschlbauer.

King Mitridate is in love with Aspasia, who in turn is loved by Mitridate’s two sons, Sifare and Farnace, whom Mitridate believes have been plotting against him. Yvonne Kenny sings Aspasia, with Ashley Putnam and Brenda Boozer in the trouser roles of Sifare and Farnace. Rockwell Blake in the title role has been acclaimed as a vocal phenomenon. His dramatic tenor encompasses an enormous range and is capable of the most fluid agility.
