Tchaikovsky Romeo et JulietteMusic by Sergei Prokofieff MiniaturesSeven contemporary compositions Though the current Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo was established in 1985, its lineage can be traced back directly to Diaghilev's ground-breaking troupe through a number of related ballet companies attached to the city. In 1993, the choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot became the company's artistic director and has subsequently helped it evolve from a regional company charged with upholding a tradition to a European contender with a unique vision and style. With La Belle Maillot has tried to revive the essence of the original fairy tale of The Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault, which has been softened and sentimentalised over the years by both the Petipa/Tchaikovsky ballet and the Disney movie version. He essentially puts the sex back into the story. Interweaving the fantastic and the natural, he constantly amazes us throughout this exceptional dance piece which was honoured with the Nijinsky Award for a Performance. The performance was filmed at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco in 2002.Casse-Noisette Circus, Maillot’s version of the classical ballet The Nutcracker, is an innovative interpretation of the well-known subject. It was Maillot’s brainchild to transpose the ballet into the world of circus, while keeping the basic tenet wherein the real world blends with the fantasy world of childhood. The performance in hand was recorded in the Festival Tent of Fontvieille in 1999.His version of Romeo & Juliet concentrates on the emotional violence inherent in adolescent sexuality. These two teenage lovers are doomed not because of families' feud, but because their obsessive love blinds them to the self-destructive road they are on. Maillot’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s drama was hailed by the press throughout the world: “one of the most beautiful ballets adapted from Shakespeare's masterpiece that can be seen today (Scènes Magazine)…The DVD in hand was recorded at the Monte Carlo Opera House in 1996.Miniatures, a series of seven choreographic displays explore the richness of human relations. Seven original musical compositions have been selected by Maillot from the work of seven contemporary composers who have been invited specially for the Printemps des Arts to take a fresh look at the deep ties between music and dance. The Ballets de Monte-Carlo presented this stunning creation at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco in April 2004 where the DVD in hand was recorded as well. Technical Details
